Toronto Argonauts Anthem Sing
The CCOC sang the national anthem at the final regular season game of the Toronto Argonauts. Tickets sold through the CCOC raised over $3000 for the organization.

 

The Canadian Children’s Opera Company Releases LULLABIES – a new multicultural CD

Image: Lullabies CD Front CoverThe Canadian Children’s Opera Company (CCOC) is thrilled to announce the release of Lullabies, a 17-track CD of cradle songs in 12 different languages that will be gifted to new parents and their babies at Toronto hospitals and women’s shelters. Lullabies is the sixth CD released by the CCOC, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018, including the 2007 Juno-nominated A Midwinter Night’s Dream. The recording was conceived by parting Executive Artistic Director Ann Cooper Gay as a gift to the children and parents of the city and country where she led the organization for fifteen years.

This multicultural recording features 17 beautiful songs revering sleep in 12 different languages, including Zulu, Lakota, Arabic, Mandarin and Greek, reflecting the enormous cultural diversity of Toronto. The Principal and Youth Choruses perform, joined by chorister and alumni soloists Erin Cooper Gay, Jacoba Barber-Rozema, Iori Lewis, Georgia Perdikoulias, Charmaine Chang, and Julia Sebastien. Internationally-renowned Egyptian-Canadian singer Maryem Tollar also performs her original song Walad ya Gamil with the children, singing and playing the traditional qanun. Ann Cooper Gay conducts, with accompanists Gergely Szokolay and Errol Gay, Ken Hall, flute and Sonia Szokolay, violin. Lullabies will be gifted to new parents and their babies at various Toronto locations including hospitals, women’s shelters and pediatrician’s offices.

Our annual winter concerts were held at Rosedale Presbyterian Church.  Junior Division performed at 4:00 pm and Senior Divisions at 5:30 pm.

For the third year, the CCOC visited two schools with a semi-staged adaptation of their holiday favourite, A Dickens of a Christmas, by Errol Gay and Michael Patrick Albano.

Joint Concert with "Hohes C" - The annual Principal and Youth Chorus camp came to a rousing close with a joint concert with the touring "Hohes C" (High C) chamber choir from Salzburg, Austria.  The concert took place at First Unitarian Congregation, 175 St Clair Ave W.  More information about the visiting choir can be found here Hohes C web site.

COC's 2013 production of La bohème - Choristers from the CCOC participated in the Canadian Opera Company's 2013 production of Puccini's La bohème.  The production ran from October 3 to 30, 2013 at the Four Seasons Centre, 145 Queen St.  W., Toronto.  This is a new COC co-production with the Houston Grand Opera and the San Francisco Opera.

Toronto Symphony Orchestra - A Christmas Carol - The Principal and Youth choruses are featured in the Toronto Symphony's annual family Christmas concert.  The chorus sings with the orchestra, and also provide actors for the telling of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Britten: The Turn of the Screw


 
In celebration of the centenary of Benjamin Britten's birth, the University of Toronto Faculty of Music's Opera Division is pleased to present the Faculty premiere of Britten's riveting, supernatural opera based upon the novella by Henry James.  Sebastian Gayowsky (YC) and Gabriel Gough (PC) will be playing the part of Miles in this production.

Recording: In Londinium - First Unitarian Congregation.  The Canadian Children’s Opera Company (CCOC) has been invited to participate in the recording of an anthem for children written for the London 2012 Olympic Games.  Gloria in Londinium (Glory in London) was written by Kathleen Shanks for the Capital Arts Children’s Choir, plus a large chorus of children known as the “big chorus”, which has been extended to include children from all five continents.  The song was recorded at the Abbey Road Studios in London.  The CCOC was selected to represent all children in the Americas for this special project and will record their part of the big chorus this coming Tuesday, July 17 2012 at First Unitarian Toronto.  Read more...

European Tour to Austria and Northern Italy - The CCOC will enter the Summa Cum Laude Festival in Vienna, and will also perform in Salzburg, Venice, Innsbruck and Graz during a 15-day tour that will include Munich, Melk, Ljubljana and Verona.  A work has been especially commissioned from Canadian composer Norbert Palej to be performed as one of the competition pieces.  Andrew Olynyk Tour Scholarship Fund.  The newly created Andrew Olynyk Tour Scholarship Fund, named in the memory of the former CCOC chorister and established in part with a gift from the Andrew Olynyk Memorial Fund and from Andrew’s family, has allowed the CCOC to subsidize three choristers who may otherwise not have been able to participate in the European tour.
