OPERAtion KIDS is our unique education and outreach program.
It began in 2008 with the help of the Metcalf Foundation as an after-school program in the west-end of Toronto. It has since expanded to incorporate in-school programs across Toronto offering teachers music, and drama workshops during class time.
OPERAtion KIDS introduces participants to the magical world of opera. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience, knowledge, or ability. Each workshop includes an introduction to acting, singing, prop-making, costumes, writing scripts, creating sets, and stage management. The program is made possible by BMO Financial Group.
In School Programs
Have your students create and perform their own original opera in just 6 weeks! At the end of the program students will showcase a 5 to 10 minute opera. Students will work together to create the story and songs to their very own opera. They will have the exciting opportunity to write their own scripts, learn to act and sing, as well as make the props, costumes, and sets for their opera. During this time they will further develop real-life skills such as: collaboration, responsibility, and self-confidence in a nurturing and creative environment. All sessions are under the direction of our professional instructors.
On the 6th week, students will perform their opera. Your school will either be paired with another school close by, or conduct the performance simultaneously in 2 classrooms at the same school. This final week also provides an opportunity for students to perform for each other.
These programs are open to grades 2 to 6. Our instructors will come to your school for a 1 hour session once a week for the 6 week duration.
