Canadian Children’s Opera Company
In the World Premiere of R. Murray Schafer's

Canadian Children's Opera Company (CCOC) closes their successful and very busy 2008/2009 season by participating in the Luminato Toronto Festival of Arts + Creativity in June. From June 5 until June 11 they will be part of a world premiere of The Children's Crusade, an opera by the illustrious Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer.
With over 100 performers, The Children's Crusade was commissioned from R. Murray Schafer in celebration of his 75th birthday. Based on an extraordinary episode in 13th-century France, when thousands of children and young people were persuaded to embark on an ill-fated expedition to the Holy Land, this dynamic opera tells a tragic, yet inspiring story of purity, innocence and passion pitted against cynicism and cruelty.
The Children's Crusade will be performed in an industrial warehouse in the heart of Parkdale (153 Dufferin Street). This innovative performance space will allow for the movement of audience and cast from scene to scene throughout the warehouse, on an interactive journey of discovery. The opera will be conducted by one of Canada's leading interpreters of operatic and choral/orchestral repertoire, David Fallis, perhaps best known in Toronto as Music Director for Opera Atelier. Internationally renowned director Tim Albery, whose credits include Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Convent Garden, and English National Opera, among many others, will direct.
The Children's Crusade is produced in association with Soundstreams Canada and co-commissioned by the Koerner Foundation, Laidlaw Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council and Luminato.
The Canadian Children's Opera Company, led by charismatic Artistic Director Ann Cooper Gay, is one of the world's few children's opera companies. The CCOC commissions, produces, records, and tours new operas and choral music, with children as principal performers. The company also regularly collaborates with other leading arts organizations and prominent individual performers, conductors, and directors. The Company contains six divisions, with over 200 children and youth of ages 5 to 19.
